EcoPlanet Bamboo earns Award for Corporate Excellence
December 9, 2014
Catherine Novelli, Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment, presented the Secretary of State’s 2014 Award for Corporate Excellence (ACE) to EcoPlanet Bamboo Group, a global developer of commercial bamboo plantations that decided to invest in Nicaragua in 2011. General Alvaro Baltodano, Presidential Delegate for Investments of the Government of Nicaragua, attended the award ceremony and met with John Kerry, Secretary of State of the United States.
The 2014 ACE, established by the U.S. Department of State, recognizes the contributions made by American companies to better life abroad. According to the Department of State, EcoPlanet Bamboo was recognized “for its work in fostering sustainable development by regenerating degraded pasturelands”, by dedicating 20 percent of its plantations as a natural habitat area that protects biodiversity by prohibiting illegal hunting. Additionally, the company was congratulated for its attention on employing persons with disabilities and empowering women in managerial positions.
PRONicaragua, the official investment and export promotion agency, has assisted EcoPlanet Bamboo during its entire investment process in Nicaragua. Ever since, the agency has been providing its aftercare services in order to guarantee the successful and responsible operation of this company in the country.
The company has invested a total of US$27 million in the country, with plans to continue to continue to do so as it expands its crops and starts the process of creating a free zone operation that will industrialize sub bamboo products. Currently, the agribusiness company owns, develops and operates more than 1,900 hectares of commercial Guadua bamboo plantations to serve the U.S. market.
Wagner Asia Equipment, LLC in Mongolia, and The Coca-Cola Company in the Philippines were also awarded this year. Past winners include other companies operating in Nicaragua such as Sahlman Seafoods, Incorporated in 2011. The Award for Corporate Excelence (ACE) sends a strong signal of the Department’s commitment to strengthen corporate social responsibility, innovation, exemplary practices, and democratic values worldwide.
