Nicaragua is internationally recognized for its high citizen safety. In recent years, it has become one of the safest countries in the Western Hemisphere. In 2017, the homicide rate for Nicaragua was 7 per every 100,000 inhabitants.

The safety levels in the country have earned Nicaragua international recognition; the country is now recognized as one of the safest countries in the Western Hemisphere. The Global Competitiveness Index, developed by the World Economic Forum (WEF), measures the countries´ abilities to provide high levels of prosperity to their citizens. In this indicator, Nicaragua is ranked as one of the safest countries with one of the lowest crime and theft rates in the American continent.
